A Double Dip in Motown

By: Matt Hoeppner

Live from Comerica Park, its a day/night doubleheader!

Sox fans I will be updating throughout the day live from Comerica Park as the Sox take on the Tigers with first place on the line. Check back throughout the day for updates and analysis from the Motown Showdown.

12:20 EST: Lineups are in and Dewayne Wise will lead off and play centerfield in game one. I guess he earned it after yesterday's heroic catch in the ninth to preserve the perfect game. The Sox will face Detroit ace Justin Verlander in game one, and Wise is a .600 career hitter against him.

Here is the rest of the lineup:

Wise CF
Ramirez SS
Dye RF
Thome DH
Konerko 1B
Pierzynski C
Quentin LF
Getz 2B
Beckham 3B
Contreras P

1:30: Sox leave the bases loaded in the 2nd. A hit and a couple of walks in the inning before Beckham grounds into a force out. First time through the lineup the Sox didnt get very good swings off Verlander but did put the ball in play. Usually you want to get good pitchers early, hopefully that wont come back to haunt them.

1:48: Sox get a lead off double in the third and cant do anything with it. They leave two on again. Sox so far 0-3 with two walks with runners in scoring position. One positive is that they have gotten Verlander to throw 49 pitches through the first three innings.

1:59: Tigers strike first with a sacrifice fly in the third off the bat of Polonco. Jose gets Clete Thomas to fly out to end the inning with Granderson at second. Contreras got a few pitches up in the inning and the Tigers made him pay.

2:10: Sox even it up in the top of the 4th. A throwing error by Miguel Cabrera allows AJ to reach base, Quentin doubles and its second and third with no outs. After a pop out by Getz, Beckham hits a sacrifice fly to score AJ. Wise grounds out and Q is left at third.

2:24: Tigers come back and take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the 4th on a bloop double by Ryan Rayburn. The Sox had the infield in with Cabrera on third and there was no chance for anyone to get to it. Contreras is lucky enough to get Laird to hit into a double play with a runner at third to end the inning. Jose has been dropping down a lot this afternoon and his pitches dont seem to have great movement.

2:30: Verlander does not have his good stuff today but the Sox have been unable to take advantage. 4 walks and an error from the Tigers and the Sox with just the one run through five innings. They have left 7 men on base so far.

2:52: Sox bats have gone silent as Verlander has retired 11 of 12. They will need to do some damage against the Tiger pen if they want to win game one.

3:08: Jose leaves afer 6.2 innings, the Tigers have tacked on two more runs in the 7th and are threatening to score more. While Mark Buehrle caught all the breaks yesterday, Jose caught none today. Three bloop/jam shot hits score runs for the Tigers. Biggest difference in the game is that Detroit got the hits with runners on, even if they were ugly, and the Sox did not.

3:11: Dotel strikes out Cabrera to retire the side. 4-1 Tigers after 7 innings.
Final Line on Jose Contreras: 6.2 in 9 hits, 4 ER, 1BB, 8 K's
Verlander back out to pitch the 8th for Detroit.

3:33: The Sox mentally checked out of this game. Two errors in the 8th inning lead to another Tigers run and the deficit is 5-1 heading to the 9th. Verlander out to try for his third complete game of the season. He has retired the last 10 Sox hitters.

3:45: Sox drop the first game 5-1. They loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth but Beckham hit into a 1-2-3 double play and Wise grounded out to end the game. A poor performace at the plate as the Sox leave 9 on base and cant break through with the big hit. Stay tuned for game two later on tonight.

1 comment:

  1. I think the Sox have to go back to the drawing board against Verlander. They used to dominate him, but he has very clearly turned the tables on them.

Today was ugly- leaving tons of runners on base in the early innings and then just swinging at the first pitch late innings.
